“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”- Lao Tzu
Perhaps the greatest joy of any school is its ability to bring together individuals of all backgrounds and ethnicities. On the first day of February, we held a mother’s meeting amongst the migrant workers’ homes in which we discussed and expressed the importance of the children continuing to attend school.
As we waited for the mothers to get settled, it was apparent there was an exciting and attentive aura surrounding the site. The mothers seemed genuinely interested in their children broadening their wisdom, expressing their happiness by sharing that their children are better behaved at home and are able to speak a few English phrases. It was not long before we were able to work with the mothers to come up with a volunteer cooking schedule. Based off their interests and abilities, each mother was paired with a dish and a day of the week. Quickly, it became the consensus that the school is definitely slowly becoming a jewel of their community. Whereas a few months ago the parents felt the school was charity from outsiders, they now agree that the school is not simply a free-standing building run by others, but an everyday part of their community and lives.
